Photographing the Tapanui One Day Event introduced me to Stephanie Dunphy, who had brought her daughter, Brylee and her beloved horse, Josh to the West Otago Racecourse to compete.
It was clear that Brylee and Josh shared a special bond, making them the perfect candidates for a special project I had in mind to expand my portfolio.
Each year I normally shoot a series of animal portraits but this year I was keen to try something new for me - the connection between a human and an animal. Emotional portraits unlike the action shots displaying riding prowess.
Brylee chose to wear a casual dress, boots and ride bareback. When I arrived, she suggested we check out their small pine forest. It was an idyllic setting with light filtering in between the trees and the glow of rusty coloured pine needles lining the floor. With mum, Stephanie, helping on reflector or throwing stuffed toys in the air to keep Josh's attention, we nailed it.
If you like these portraits, please share them with your horse loving friends by tagging them in the comments below. Tnx, Nat
